Mandela Day in Cape Town? Here's how you can pay tribute and join in on all the fun!

On July 18, which is Nelson Mandela's birthday, South Africa celebrates Mandela Day. It is customary to dedicate 67 minutes—a reflection of Nelson Mandela's 67 years of service to South Africa—to improving the state of the globe. Since Madiba's 90th birthday, when he delivered a speech urging everyone to take action immediately, this day has been observed globally.

There are lots of volunteer opportunities, interesting places to visit, and special events being conducted in honour of the man who led the charge to end apartheid in our young democracy. For ideas on how to commemorate Mandela Day in Cape Town, keep reading.

Put together food parcels.

Use 67 minutes of your day to FoodForward SA food parcel packing. Nelson Mandela considered food security to be crucial because he thought that everyone could have enough if they had the correct motive. Many people still lack access to food in spite of his best efforts to combat the enormous problem of food insecurity. In addition to helping feed people wholesome, nutritious meals, packing and distributing food parcels raises awareness of the problem and brings it to the front of the national agenda. At the FoodForward SA warehouse in Lansdowne, Cape Town, three sessions will be held.
